FLATLANDIA di E.A. Abbott- Satira, Distopia e Paura del Diverso

Da Tuttolibri di oggi,  Sabato 2 Luglio 2011, segnaliamo con grande piacere l’invito a leggere Flatland, a Romance of Many Dimensions, di E.A. Abbott, un romanzo che attraversa  con grande efficacia la satira, la distopia e la paura del diverso. Una lettura  importante per tutti e soprattutto  per i  giovani.  Tanto importante da diventare protagonista di una bella esperienza didattica di cui  voglio raccontarvi la storia.

 

FLATLAND: A PLACE IS A LANGUAGE

A CLIL module to refresh students’ interest in scientific subjects

Based on A.E. Abbott Flatland, A Romance of many dimensions, 1884 

 

The CLIL module here presented was carried out by the English and Mathematics teachers in the fifth form of a Language Course, at  ITAS “P.Scalcerle”, a secondary school in Padua.

The aim was to creatively refresh the students’ interest in Mathematics and Physics through the integration of the scientific area with the literary and linguistic “dimensions” of English.

The fantastic English novel, Flatland, A Romance of many dimensions, written by A.E. Abbott in 1884, offered the ground for the analysis. In fact the main characters of the story are geometrical figures and the setting consists in different dimensions and/or fantastic worlds and unusual situations. Style is basically realistic, denotative and scientific, but also rich in irony and satire.

The project is presented and discussed in this paper to assess the experience and highlight its most qualifying aspects, among which the theoretical reference supporting the didactic choices made and the role and level of participation of the discipline teacher. Il lavoro presenta  spunti interessanti di applicazione di approcci  metodologici innovativi come il CLIL  (Content and Language Integrated Learning) e il Cooperative Learning.  Con  gli studenti  di una classe Quinta del Liceo Linguistico “P. Scalcerle” di Padova e con il collega di Matematica e Fisica abbiamo impostato un percorso didattico articolato basato su:

-concetto di Competenza Parziale (Quadro Comune Europeo di Riferimento per l’Insegnamento/Apprendimento delle Lingue Moderne) per permettere al docente di Matematica di  partecipare alle attività sfruttando le sue competenze nella Lettura e Comprensione di testi  scientifici   in Inglese;

-sviluppo  delle Abilità Superiori degli studenti.

Fanno buona compagnia a questo romanzo, integrandone il contenuto e il messaggio, due ben note Distopie trattate a scuola nel programma di  Lingua e Civiltà Inglese: 1984 di George Orwell e Brave New World di Aldous Huxley.
