Maggio 2013 – Affascinailtuocuore

Rosamond, narratrice principale oltre, che personaggio affascinante e ben costruito, si congeda da questo mondo in modo molto personale. Prima di andarsene decide di lasciare un testamento insolito: un audio messaggio in cui ricostruisce, attraverso venti fotografie, pietre miliari e turning points catalizzatori dello sviluppo della storia, la sua vita e quella di tutte le persone, soprattutto donne, che hanno abitato l’esistenza tragica di Imogen, la destinataria della “ricostruzione”.

Una storia che abbraccia gli eventi bellici della seconda guerra mondiale, i bambini di Londra e delle grandi città sfollati nelle campagne e allontanati dai loro genitori. Il dopo guerra, gli anni della contestazione 68esca e i folli anni 70 accompagnano il lettore, fino alla contemporaneità.

All’ interno di questi grandi eventi si dipanano le storie di Rosamond e Rebecca e del loro amore fuori dagli schemi; di Beatrice/Annie con tutte le sue inquietudini, a cavallo tra Canada e Inghilterra; la storia tragica e criminale di Thea, dei suoi uomini malati e di sua figlia Imogen. Accanto a queste c’è la storia di Gill, con le sue figlie, che per prime ascoltano il lungo e intenso messaggio di Rosamond, con curiosità, stupore e interesse. Dovrà essere proprio Gill a trovare Imogen e a consegnarle questa eredità.

Tra Londra e Midlands

L’ambientazione è suggestiva: tra Londra, le Midlands e i magici paesaggi nello Shropshire, dove incontriamo anche Bonaparte, piccolo cane protagonista suo malgrado di un evento cruciale; dove i Natali diventano un rito irrinunciabile; dove la vecchia e arrugginita roulotte nascosta tra gli alberi diventa il rifugio segreto delle adolescenti Beatrix e Rosamond, in cerca di avventura e magia.

La musica

L’arte caratterizza molte delle vite descritte nel libro: la musica d’avanguardia della compositrice Catherine, figlia di Gill; il rock dannato di Michael, grande amore di Thea e Bailero, nei Chants d’Auvergne, di Joseph Canteloube, che illumina la vita di Ros.

“Those three weeks in France were undoubtedly the happiest of my life, and everything that was good about them is crystallized in this photograph, and in the song baileiro, which never fails to evoke for me images of that lake, and that meadow, where we lay alla afternoon amidst the long grass and the wild flowers while Thea played down by the water…[…] “then she announced:” Well, I like the rain before it falls”p. 160

E poi c’è il ritratto di Imogen, che non potrà mai vederlo, ma potrebbe viverlo sia tramite le escrescenze di colore ad olio usate dall’artista Ruth, ultima compagna di Ros, che tramite la descrizione che la stessa Ros ne fa nel suo messaggio/testamento.

Al cinema

E ancora, il cinema: Rosamond e Beatrix fanno le comparse in un film americano girato a Much Wenlock. Molto bello il flashback di Ros sulla sua “cotta” per Jennifer Jones in Duello al sole e le sue riflessioni su questo amore impossibile, spia di qualcosa di diverso che stava già succedendo nel suo cuore. Tutte le sue coetanee e le donne in genere, in quei giorni, impazzivano per Gregory Peck, lei no, lei era perdutamente presa da Mrs David O’Selznick, meglio conosciuta come Jennifer Jones!

La bellissima invenzione della narrazione, arricchita da elementi culturali anche sofisticati, attraverso le fotografie e la conseguente costruzione del climax, tra cronaca e flashback, si “smaglia” verso la fine, tra nuovi messaggi, notizie sorprendenti e melodramma.

“The Rain Before It Falls is a lyrical novel written by British author Jonathan Coe. It describes the history of three generations of women directly or indirectly affected by events in post-war London and rural Shropshire. The novel contrasts with Coe’s previous works in that it is almost apolitical, examining both the welcome and the undesirable legacies parents leave their children. Most of the story is told through recordings of an old lady called Rosamond who describes on tape twenty photographs that represent a family’s history. The main part of the book consists of descriptions of the various photographs, framed by a background story. There is also, for Coe, a surprising streak of sentimentality, unleavened by his usual coruscating wit. There is steeliness here and it is welcome, particularly in the facts of life for a lesbian in the 50s and 60s, but the final words of Rosamond on tape are a little too woolly for the tough, shrewd woman who’s gone before…”

” Brit-jazz composer and arranger […]born in 1937 in Zimbabwe.
