Strout scrive un sapiente romanzo di introspezione psicologica, molto americano nei rapporti conflittuali tra genitori e figli, specialmente padre-figlio e nello svelare vizi, virtù e miserie tristi della borghesia del Maine. Su tutto domina il tentativo di analizzare e comprendere il fenomeno dell’identità e dell’integrazione.
Molto interessante è il ritratto di una comunità disorientata di fronte al gesto eclatante di un ragazzo problematico, Zach: una testa di maiale sanguinante viene gettata sui tappeti della moschea mentre i fedeli Somali sono in preghiera. Anatema! Eppure, il ruolo del vecchio saggio Somalo sarà determinante per l’esito della vicenda.
I fratelli Burgess tornano a Shirley Falls per aiutare il nipote Zach ad uscire dai guai. Sono due avvocati: brillante, ricco e famoso Jim; riflessivo, insicuro, apparentemente fragile, Bob. Tornano lì da dove erano scappati per non essere soffocati nella palude del Maine. Questo ritorno segna l’inizio del cambiamento.
La comunità Somala e i suoi usi e costumi diventa lo specchio deformante dell’immagine stereotipata e condivisa dell’America, agli occhi dei suoi cittadini. Lo capisce bene Susan quando va a trovare i fratelli a New York.
Lo shock culturale l’assale: Shirley Falls vs NY. Arrivare da un altro mondo e atterrare in una città di pazzi, sporca, sotterranea e piena di celle in cui vivono uomini e donne che si illudono di guardare tutto dall’alto. Bianchi che guardano bianchi.
New York, New York! Sempre lei, magica e terribile, a fare da sfondo a una sfaccettata storia di identità, familiari e sociali. Così come fa da sfondo quel Maine, provincia “nobile”, tanto esaltata e adorata dagli intellettuali e dai radical chic… Quella provincia che tuttavia soffoca i Burgess, ma che contribuirà, essa stessa, a compiere il processo di cambiamento che domina la storia.
Jim, Bob e Susan Burgess sembrano tre twins, anche se i veri gemelli sono Bob e Susan. Tutti e tre si oppongono e si completano, allo stesso tempo. Sono uniti per la vita, o meglio, per un lungo tratto della loro vita, da un segreto inconfessabile che ha minato il loro sviluppo individuale, familiare e sociale.
Il cuore della storia è il rovesciamento di prospettive, di vite e di punti di vista. La parola chiave è “cambiamento”. Tutti sono costretti a cambiare sotto la spinta di eventi esterni drammatici, passando attraverso l’infelicità sostanziale dell’uomo di successo, la frustrazione del fratello “debole”, le paranoie e il senso di superiorità della donna ricca ed elegante, Il tradimento del marito perfetto, la sindrome del nido vuoto, le frustrazioni della moglie abbandonata, il piacere maledetto dell’alcol, “The quiet majesty of long marriages…”, come ironicamente dice Franzen in Freedom.
Tutta Jackie, “the pink-suited wife”questa materia ed altro ancora fanno del romanzo di Strout un bell’ affresco moderno.

Ritorno a Shirley Falls
Jim parla con Bob del suo ritorno a Shirley Falls, quasi a prepararsi psicologicamente all’evento e parla dei nuovi cittadini, in particolare dei Somali, e del loro ruolo nella vecchia società del Maine:
“So I now come back. And I come back to say, Hey, you guys, here’s a state whose population is getting older and poorer and industry is leaving, has left, for the most part. I’ll say the vibrancy of society depends on newness, and what a fantastic job Shirley Falls has done in welcoming this newness, let’s keep on with it. The truth is, Bob, they need those immigrants… p.128
